The costumes above are based upon the Tim Burton movies. The Mad Hatter costume is extravagant. It has a velvet jacket with lace trim on the sleeves and multicolor ribbon accents, a faux shirt front, an oversized bow and a pair of pinstriped pants with floral accents. The hat really sets off this costumes with its peach satin ribbon and electric orange hair attached.

The Alice costume is a beautiful light blue dress that would look fantastic at any fancy dress event or if you prefer to be more stern, try the magnificent Red Queen costume.

Following on from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass both written by Lewis Carroll, we see the now 19 year old Alice accidentally returning to Wonderland. She is told that she is the only person who can slay the dragon, Jabberwocky, who is controlled by the Red Queen.

Alice is portrayed as a young woman who has had to conform to the strictures of Victorian behaviour and finds through her adventures that she becomes a much more strong-willed woman. Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter in his own inimitable style with orange hair, crazy clothes and a wacky personality. Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen, a combination of the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts from the original Lewis Carroll stories.

These wonderful and magical stories were written by the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll in 1865. Both Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass were written for Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, where Dodgson met Alice and her family. Alice so loved his stories that she asked him to write them down and he eventually did so. Lewis Carroll also wrote two of the greatest nonsense poems of all time: Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark.

The story of Alice in Wonderland has inspired many television and movie adaptations in the past including Disney’s animated version in 1951. Below are some more Alice in Wonderland costumes that are similar to the ones from the Disney movies.

The Elite Queen Of Hearts costume above is a magnificent and beautifully detailed creation produced with fine fabrics and trim. It includes a full length gown, white lace collar and cuffs, a black and white satin bodice with red heart accent and black peplum, a red velvet skirt with printed heart details on a white satin inset with gold trim. It’s completed by a black velvet choker and a sequin heart tiara. A hoop and tulle petticoat is also included.

The Miss Wonderland Alice costume above is a pretty light blue dress with matching puffy sleeves. It has an attached apron with black lace-up with heart, spade and diamond images on the bodice and a checkerboard underskirt. There’s also a black headbankd with an attached bow. Just the costume for playing croquet!

The child’s Mad Hatter costume above is a black dress with sheer pink accents and faux leather top portion. It has a bright green bow and a metallic pink mad hatter top hat. Personally, I love this costume.

There are some memorable characters from Alice in Wonderland and none more so that the Queen of Hearts. She is such a foul-tempered and disgusting woman who gets angry at the slightest of offense and often repeats that famous line: “Off with their heads”. Apart from wanting to decapitate people who offend her, she also loves croquet. However, it’s no ordinary croquet! She plays with a mallet which is a flamingo and the balls which are live hedgehogs. The Queen’s soldiers act as hoops on the croquet ground but after they are dragged away to be executed she, the King and Alice are the only ones left. What’s quite amusing is that very few people are actually beheaded because the kindly King of Hearts pardons them without the Queen’s knowledge.

Another fun character is the Cheshire Cat who has the widest grin. Alice first meets him in the kitchen of the Duchess’s house and then on the branches of a tree. He keeps on appearing and disappearing whilst having amusing but often baffling conversations with Alice. We see the Cheshire cat gradually disappear until all that is left is his grin, which prompts Alice to say that she has often seen a cat without a grin, but never a grin without a cat.

If you want to grin like a Cheshire cat this Halloween make sure that you dress in one of the great Alice Wonderland costumes and be transported to Wonderland.
